Camena turns a real route into narration that plays by itself. You pick a tour, download it, put the phone in your pocket, and each place's story starts when you reach it. Walking, cycling, or driving. Nothing to tap, and no signal needed once the audio is on the device.

It is built in Victoria, British Columbia, and the launch catalogue is entirely Victoria and Vancouver Island.

Camena is built by Diogo Travassos, on his own, in Victoria.

The Highway 1 tour covers both directions on one purchase. Victoria to Nanaimo and Nanaimo to Victoria are separate narrations of the same corridor, not the same audio played backwards.

Where to get it

Each tour page carries a route map, the full stop list, and an English audio sample with a transcript, so a story can be reported without installing anything.

How it works

  1. Download. Pick a tour; the audio, the route, and the stop details come down before you leave. Live street-map imagery may still need a connection. The narration does not.
  2. Go. Set up before you start moving, then travel at your own pace. Nothing to hold, read, or tap on the way.
  3. Listen. Each story starts when you reach the place it is about, and stops when you leave. Skip a stop and the tour carries on; double back and it is still there.

How the tours are made

Every tour is researched stop by stop before a word is written, and the research is kept.

Stops are placed against the real route rather than guessed from an address, and the pacing is set by how fast you are actually moving, so a cycling tour is not written like a walk.

Everything in it is made in-house: the research, the narration and the app. Nothing in the catalogue is licensed in from an existing tour operator.

Why Camena exists

In Diogo's words.

I came here from Brazil by way of Vancouver, and I have been in Victoria almost four years now. My kids were born here. The house is here, the company is here. I am not going anywhere.

My family still comes over from Brazil, and every time they do I want to show them what the Island is made of. That is really where this started. People arriving from very far away with almost no idea what is around them, and a region with a lot more in it than a day trip usually turns up.

I looked for something that already did this, and nothing got to where I needed. None of it ran in other languages, so my family could not follow along. And I could not find a driving tour I could just connect to the car and listen to on the way to Nanaimo or Tofino. So the languages are not a feature I added later. They are the reason I started.

The first route I tested was the cruise-day walk. I used to live in James Bay and I would watch the ships come in all summer, thousands of people at once, and I liked walking down to Fisherman's Wharf and the Inner Harbour along with them. Knowing what I was actually looking at turned out to be the missing piece.

The hardest part has been getting the Indigenous history right, and I will not claim I have it perfect. I have spent a lot of time on sources, on pronunciation, on video and on literature, trying to understand what life has been on these shores for thousands of years. First Nations stories have been erased and misrepresented so often that the last thing I wanted was to add to it. So I drew a line. I do not tell stories that belong to someone else: not the Thunderbird, not creation. I would like to, and it is not my story to tell. What I do include is the places, the peoples, the languages, and how they worked this land, checked against sources before any of it is recorded.

And the weather. I came from Brazil looking for mild winters and sunny days, and in all of Canada you will not do better than Victoria.
