That wall running out into the strait is a gamble, and you're standing at the shore end of it. When the first stone went down, the Panama Canal was about to halve the sailing distance from the Atlantic to this coast, and Victoria bet that the world's shipping would come looking for a deep, sheltered berth at the top of that new run. So: three-quarters of a kilometre of granite pushed straight out into open water, to catch trade that hadn't happened yet. The ship you just walked off is the payout, arriving about a century late and carrying something nobody at the drafting table ever imagined.
